The familiar American chain has a roadside hotel/motel at the Amesbury exit of the A303, just 6 miles east of Stonehenge.

The rates are just a tad over £100, and the rooms are largely identical, with choice of firm or soft pillows and slightly psychedelic butterfly wallpaper behind the beds. The windows are double glazed to cut down on noise from the neighboring highway.

Family rooms with a convertible sofa bed are available, and kids under 18 stay for free in their parents' room.

There's a restaurant (kids under 12 eat free), a bar, and a Starbucks counter (just in case staying at a Holiday Inn wasn't enough of an American chain fix).

If you are driving here (likely), note that the entrance to this "Solstice Park" complex is pretty far to the west of the actual hotel, at the Texaco gas station/Cotsa, so don't worry if you seem to be overshooting it.
