From corgis to stallions, animals have always been important companions to kings, queens, knights, and saints. On this 2-hour National Gallery for Families Tour, we'll take an adventurous visit to London's National Gallery to meet tamed dragons, alluring cats, and trustworthy dogs. We'll learn about these beloved animals' relationships with their owners as well as the painter depicting them, and how the stories of history's greatest personalities are often linked to that of their pets—making some drawings of our own along the way.
Note: Families, we also offer a National Gallery for Families Tour focusing on the gods, goddesses, and other characters to be found in the Gallery.
- Introduces children to art through fun activities
- Led by an art historian trained to work with children.
- Incorporates activities to stimulate learning in a fun and engaging way.
National Gallery for Families Tour
During the walk, we may encounter the famous rhinoceros Miss Clara, a celebrity of the 18th century that toured Europe and was painted by Pietro Longhi in 1751 in Venice, or the incredible Whistlejacket that George Stubbs depicted in 1762 for the Marquess of Rockingham. Regardless, this fun and interactive history of animals also tells their story as companions to the greatest figures of British history. Using the National Gallery as our canvas, we'll weave a narrative that takes us from the the spaniels of the Tudor court, to Winston Churchill's dog Rufus II, to Queen Elizabeth II's famous Welsh Corgis.
Looking for this tour for adults? Try our National Gallery Tour.
Interactive Activities
Meanwhile, we'll have fun throughout the walk with a range of fun activities for kids and parents. Maybe we'll pick our favorite animals and draw a coat of arms. Or, perhaps we'll draw ourselves with our pets, thinking about what the different symbols in portraits mean. We might even use our imaginations to come up with a fantasy beast, then draw it! No matter what, we'll walk away from this tour with a better understanding of what it takes to draw animals—and what the animals mean.
Take Aways
By the end of the tour, both kids and their lucky parents will have developed a deeper appreciation for the many fascinating characters and stories to be found throughout the National Gallery. Children and adults will come away with a better understanding of British history, and the importance of painting both through history and today. We'll learn about the important role that pets have played throughout history and how they were represented in art. Additionally, we'll explore why some people wanted unusual animals in their paintings, ranging from a phoenix or dragon, to an owl or monkey.

Embark on a 2.5-hour, family-friendly Tower of London tour, specially designed to draw out the tower’s murky history in a creative and imaginative way. Set out on a cruise along the Thames River, envisioning the smugglers, pirates, and mutineers that once sailed its waters as you listen to the onboard guide's commentary. Then, be among the first of the day's groups to visit the Tower of London. Explore with your guide and learn about its history, which is brought vividly to life through engaging tales that keep the youngsters of your group in mind.
Make your way to Embankment Pier on the Thames River to begin your family-friendly tour. Here, hop aboard a boat for a cruise down the river, or as your guide will describe it, “a ship to sail the high seas like the mariners of the past would have done.”
Take in views of the city as your guide regales you and your family with tales of the smugglers, pirates, and mutineers that once sailed these same waters and the fate that befell them when caught. Envision the scallywags who were once marched across London Bridge by a man with a silver oar – the symbol of the power of the Admiralty – en route to their punishment.
Once the Tower of London comes into view along the riverbanks, it’s time to disembark. Admire views of both the London Bridge and the Tower Bridge — one of the most recognizable bridges in the world — and imagine the events that have taken place at these sites. Any young ones will be hard at play, completing the specially designed activity materials provided by the guide.
Next it’s one to the Tower of London, a notorious former prison and execution ground where even members of the British Royal Family came to a fateful end. An early morning arrival means that you'll be among the tower's first explorers of the day.
Enter the grounds and let history come alive as your guide bares the tower’s secrets. See the guardians known as “Beefeaters,” and learn about their proud traditions; find out the former use of the ominously named Traitor’s Gate; and hear the legend of the ravens that stalk the grounds.
Marvel, too, at the spectacular Crown Jewels, see the medieval palace where royalty once lived and the towers where prisoners were once held, and march along the ramparts, enjoying spectacular river views as you go.
Your tour concludes inside the Tower of London, leaving you free to spend the rest of your day as you wish.

Ever wondered about the dinosaurs? They arose from a group of lizard-like animals and cousins of the crocodiles, and went on to dominate the world for one hundred and sixty-five million years. They were as small as chickens, and as large as double-decker buses. They ate grass, meat, each other, and their own children. They were the lions and tigers, the cows and birds, the dogs and cats of the ancient world; they walked the land, swam in the sea and took to the air. And 65 million years ago their story came to an abrupt end. Learn more about the rise an fall of the dinosaurs on this Natural History Museum London Tour for Kids, led by an archeologist trained in visual learning strategies.

Natural History Museum London Tour for Kids
To make sense of the dinosaurs, we need to look at what came before, and what came after. So this tour covers a vast period of geological time, from the very beginnings of life on earth some four billion years ago, through to the modern diversity of mammals—which has its origins in the dinosaur’s cataclysmic extinction.
The tour starts with a trip through the Earth Galleries, providing a short geological and geographical background to paleontology, followed by a run-through of the evolution of life and the timescales involved. We then progress through the dinosaur paleontology section of the museum, with an introduction to ancient biogeography and dinosaurian anatomy, evolution, diet and behavior. The natural history of the modern world, and how it rushed to fill the gap left by the dinosaurs, will also be examined.
You don’t need to be a scientist to appreciate this tour; all you need is curiosity about the immense variation and splendor of ancient worlds, and to wonder how the planet got to where it is now, and where it is going next.

Armed with art supplies and our imaginations, we'll not only learn some of the skills necessary to make masterworks like the ones on display, but we'll develop an appreciation for western art through the ages.

On our journey, we will hear the legends of the Greek and Roman gods, including Mars, the god of war, and Venus, the goddess of love, as well as the fate of Ariadne, who was deserted on an island by her lover, Theseus, and later discovered by the god of wine, Bacchus. We will also see how artists interpreted the stories of the holy books and meet the Queen of Sheba on her journey to test the wisdom of King Solomon with gifts of gold. Or perhaps we will find out the secret of Samson's superhuman strength and discover who betrayed his secret.
Reading a Painting
As we explore, we will learn to decipher the signs and symbols that give us clues to the meaning of different paintings. For example, which saint always holds an arrow and why? Who is dressed in animal skins? Who holds a golden apple, and what does an hourglass symbolize? What does a dog, or a dove, or a horse represent in a painting?
Looking for more family-friendly museum tours in London? Try our Tower of London for Kids or British Museum for Kids Tours.
Interactive Activities
Throughout the walk, we'll also engage with the paintings through a series of interactive activities. Maybe we'll take out our pencils and decide to try our hands at sketching some of the paintings we see—inserting ourselves into the picture! Or, perhaps we'll take a closer look at painting; just how do they get so many colors and textures onto the canvas? Either way, we'll walk away with a deepened appreciation for the craft of some of Europe's masters—and a few new artistic skills.
Take Aways
Over the course of this walk, we will learn how artists over the centuries have translated the great literary and oral narratives from words to paint as we hear and see these stories. I've bumped into several of his tour groups in Europe over the years, and the participants always gush about what a great time they're having. He also keeps his groups smaller than most (24 to 28 travelers versus the 40 to 60 many big companies cram onto the bus), and the smaller the group, the more authentic the experiences each member is going to have (to say nothing of more room on the bus). One of our most unique walks around London, discover how close the City of London has come to destruction and learn about the life of Londoners during the War. In 1666, the medieval city all but disappeared in the Great Fire of London. The city was rebuilt on the footprint of its predecessor and then seriously damaged again during the Blitz of 1940-1941. One of the worst nights was the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day, December 29, 1940, when the warehouses and offices were empty and people were at home enjoying Christmas break. That night, the area around St Paul’s was devastated and those working on the ground dubbed it 'The Second Great Fire of London’. In general, only those buildings with firewatchers on their roofs survived.

Make you own way to the Banqueting House, located near the Thames River and 10 Downing Street, where the British prime minister lives and works. This 17th-century building is the only remaining part of the Palace of Whitehall, a vast royal complex that was burnt to the ground in 1698.
Before you enter, pause outside the front of the building on the pavement. This is the spot where Charles I was beheaded on a brutally cold day in 1649, after being convicted of high treason. Head inside to learn more about Charles I and to explore the interior. Architect Inigo Jones designed the Italianate Renaissance-style building and took inspiration for the design from a recent trip to Italy, .
Wander through the impressive banqueting hall, which would have been used as a venue for entertainment. Look out for a bronze bust of James I, which sits above the door in the banqueting hall. The bust was designed by Hubert Le Sueur, who also made the equestrian statue of Charles I in Charing Cross, near Trafalgar Square.
Take some time to soak up Rubens' impressive canvases — exuberant masterpieces that adorn the ceiling of Banqueting House. Commissioned by Charles I, the paintings glorify his father, King James I.
Spend as long as you want in the palace. Once you leave, make your own way back to your accommodation or continue sightseeing.
Visit the exciting and often dangerous world of Elizabethan London where in 1599, Bankside was the entertainment center of the capital packed with gambling dens, brothels, bear-baiting pits and theaters. Ordinary people flocked to see Shakespeare's plays and they laughed, cried, shouted abuse at the actors, ate and drank during the performances.
As a visitor to the Exhibition you'll discover how shows were produced in the theaters of Shakespeare's time, from writing and rehearsals to music, dance and performance. Learn about the traditional crafts and techniques used during the process of rebuilding the Globe and find out how special effects were produced in Shakespeare's time — from thunder and lightning to flying on stage and realistic blood and gore.
Listen to recordings from some of the most Shakespearean performances ever or join the cast and add your own voice to a scene recorded by Globe actors. Create your own Shakespearean phrases in the word jungle, watch a sword-fighting display and browse the costume collection, where you can find out about the extraordinary methods used in creating clothes 400 years ago.
A visit to the Exhibition includes a guided tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre where storytellers take you on a fascinating half-hour tour of the auditorium. Journey through time to Elizabethan London with their colourful tales of the 1599 theater experience as well as the reconstruction process of the 1990s and how the wooden 'o' works today as an imaginative and experimental theatrical space.
Afternoon Tea Upgrade Option
After visiting the Globe, you can upgrade to enjoy a quintessentially British afternoon tea — with a twist. Served at the Globe’s Swan restaurant, the tea is inspired by scenes from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Sip prosecco and your choice of tea, and indulge in a delectable selection of finger sandwiches, scones and cakes — many of which can be traced back to characters and food featured in the play. See the Itinerary for a sample menu.
Please note: If you’ve opted for the upgrade, please arrive by 11:45am (Monday to Saturday) or 10:45am (Sunday) to ensure you have enough time for the exhibition and tour before the afternoon tea.

Make sure you bring a camera. Packed with Harry Potter trivia and anecdotes throughout, you’ll see all these sights and more on your 2.5 hour walking tour.

- Smithsonianjourneys.org - The Smithsonian run highly regarded, rather expensive educational and adventure trips specifically designed for the whole clan—including an "Exploring London and Paris" family journey.
- Vacationkids.com - Not a tour company, but an outfit that will hook you up with a travel agent to arrange your family vacation.
- Ricksteves.com - PBS superstar Rick Steves runs a highly successful tour company—with both general tours and family-specific tours—that really tries to highlight all the best of the independent travel style espoused in his books and TV show in a group format. (Disclosure: I know Rick, but have recommended his product long before that, even if we were once guidebook competitors!)
- intrepidtravel.com - One of my favorite tour companies offers several family itineraries. They make a concerted effort to travel like real independent travelers—small groups (max of 12 people), staying in mom-and-pop accommodations and getting around by public transport (trains, local buses, bikes, feet) rather than a big tour bus. Aimed at a slightly more adventurous, slightly younger crowd, and close to true, independent travel. The U.K. doesn't often appear in their family catalog, but worth checking out just in case.Partner
- Gadventures.com - Similar to Intrepid, but based in Canada. G Adventures offers a variety of adventure trips, including many hiking, trekking, and multi-sport active vacations—and many Family Adventures as well. The U.K. doesn't often appear in their family catalog, but worth checking out just in case.Partner
- Journeysinternational.com - This outfit started as a families-only tour company, and they still cater largely to that crowd. Nothing currently in the U.K.—though they do offer custom private vacation planning.
- Learningjourneys.com - This educational-trip offshoot of the famous Perillo Tours has plenty of family adventures—though not always ones in the U.K. Worth checking out.
- Familyadventures.com - Thomson Family Adventures forcuses on adventurous family trips to mostly exotic locales—Alaska, Baja, Belize, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, Galapagos, Morocco, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Tanzania, Thailand, and Turkey. They do also offer Ireland, though.

As we explore, we will learn to decipher the signs and symbols that give us clues to the meaning of different paintings, including which saint always holds an arrow, and who is dressed in animal skins? Who holds a golden apple, and what does an hourglass symbolize? What does a dog, or a dove, or a horse represent in a painting?

- The Blitz - London During the War -
One of our most unique walks around London, discover how close the City of London has come to destruction and learn about the life of Londoners during the War.
- Led by a local historian.

- Dinosaur Hunt: Discovering the Natural History Museum -
Ever wondered about the dinosaurs? They arose from a group of unpromising-looking lizard-like animals and cousins of the crocodiles, and went on to dominate the world for one hundred and sixty-five million years. They were as small as chickens, and as large as double-decker buses. They ate grass, meat, each other and their own children. They were the lions and tigers, the cows and birds, the dogs and cats of the ancient world; they walked the land, swam in the sea and took to the air. And 65 million years ago their story came to an abrupt end.
- Led by an archaeologist
- Learn about dinosaurs in a world class museum
